The short answer
Do the free Google Business Profile first if you serve customers in person in one area. Get a website as well when you need to show full prices, answer questions in detail, sell online, or reach people outside your immediate area. If you're online-only, you can't have a profile at all, so you need a website.
The comparison
| Google Business Profile | Website | |
|---|---|---|
| Cost | Free from Google | From about ₹3,000 to ₹18,000, plus about ₹1,000 a year |
| Who can have one | Only businesses that meet customers in person | Anyone |
| Shows on Google Maps | Yes, that's its main job | Only through a profile |
| Reach | Mostly people nearby | Anyone searching, anywhere |
| Reviews | Yes, and they matter | Can quote them |
| Full prices, long answers | Limited | Yes, as much as you need |
| Take orders or bookings | Limited | Yes |
| Who controls the rules | Google can change or suspend it | You |
| AI answers can read it | Often, indirectly | Yes, if the text is in the HTML |
When a profile alone is enough for now
- Your customers are nearby and find you by searching "near me".
- You sell by phone call or by walk-in.
- You have little that needs explaining: a barber, a mechanic, a tea shop.
- You're just starting and money is tight.
Here's how to set one up yourself for free.
When you need a website too
- Customers compare before they contact you: clinics, schools, hotels, builders.
- You need to explain prices, process or qualifications.
- You sell or take bookings online.
- Customers come from outside your town: silk buyers, temple visitors, exporters.
- You want to be cited in AI answers. They rely heavily on web pages and third-party sites.
What about a Facebook page?
A Facebook page is useful for showing recent work to people who already follow you. But it doesn't do the job of either: many people will never see it, you don't control it, and it's weak at answering a search. Treat it as an extra, not a replacement.
Our honest order for a small local business

- SEO, if people really search for what you sell
Common questions
Can a Google Business Profile replace a website?
For some small local businesses, at first, it can. If people find you nearby, call you and visit you, a complete profile with real reviews may do most of the work. It can't replace a website for full prices, detailed answers, selling online or reaching customers beyond your area.
Do I need a website to have a Google Business Profile?
No. You can create a profile without one, and it's free. A website gives the profile somewhere to link to, and gives you pages that you control.
Does having a website help my Google Maps ranking?
It can. Google says local results are based on relevance, distance and prominence, and prominence includes how well-known you are across the web, including links. A clear website helps Google understand what you do.
